My father born in 1906 told me that his mother a Black Dutch had short legs and a long torso which has been passed down to all her descendants including myself. Her surname was Surratt (Cass Cty. Tx). Can anyone tell me if they know any black dutch families that have short legs and a long torso so I can get in touch with them. 205-681-5509.

Thank you for all the good information, Mike. I would love to join the yahoo group called Black Dutch. I've been told my ancestors are Black Dutch as well. I'm on the hunt for more discoveries.

My mother was a Shipley, and her family was from the Cumberland Gap area of TN. I have been told by her sisters that we are of Black Dutch ancestry. I would very much like to know more about my ancestry. Where could I find out more about whether Shipleys were Black Dutch (or Melungeon)?
